Crop Protection Classification

Labels are registered, not compounds! This golden rule is often overlooked, when strategies for registration of plant protection products are developed. Two components contribute to a good label for a new active ingredient: marketing aspects and registration strategy. To optimize sales, label recommendations should be as wide as possible. In this case, however, the registration may be difficult, time consuming and expensive. The opposite is true for a special use "narrow" label. The registration may be easy, but the market value is small.
In Europe environmental aspects are increasingly driving the evaluation process for a new plant protection product. Potential problems associated with persistence, leaching, or environmental toxicity may be overcome with a suitable label recommendation that restricts the use in certain areas or during critical times. People and regulators in North America are concerned about residues in food. Problems with residues would require a careful selection of the use recommendations, pre-harvest intervals, and the target crops mentioned on the label. Risk of exposure to hazardous substances of operators, farm workers and the general public that are particular issues in hot countries can be reduced by protective clothes or suitable application procedures mentioned on the label.
LKC Switzerland Ltd helps to develop a good label strategy, which finds a compromise between economics and registration requirements and which allows fast registration and a smooth entrance into the market at affordable cost.
